BIOGRAPHY
Karen Fitzgerald’s work is widely exhibited in the United States. The Milwaukee Art Museum, the Queens Museum of Art, Islip Art Museum and the Sonoma Museum of Visual Art have featured her work.
A variety of public and private collections include her work: the New York Public Library, the Reinhart Collection (Germany) and many others. The New York Foundation for the Arts, Greenwall Foundation, Queens Community Arts Fund and Women’s Studio Center have all supported her with individual artist’s grants She is a master teaching artist, providing consulting services for a broad range of institutions.
ART STATEMENT
" Roundness is fundamental to my visual thinking. The form conveys an essence of interconnection, wholeness and metaphysical purpose. When you look into one of my paintings, you respond to the color, nuance and energy embedded in the piece. I use the gilded ground as a cue; the precious metal indicates something beyond our physical world, something metaphysical.
The essential relationship of matter and spirit is at the heart of my work. The physicality of the earth is tangible and real. But another dimension is indelibly linked to that materiality, one that is experienced even though it cannot be measured or delineated. That elusive relationship between matter and spirit has been explored extensively in verbal form—poetry, philosophy, metaphysics—and those texts are important touchstones in my work. Finding a way to translate that awareness into visual language is an essential commitment in my work."
